Are you a PM Believer?

Happy International Project Management Day!

Today is International Project Management day, an annual event always celebrated on the first Thursday of November. This day is intended to celebrate project managers and the practice of project management.

In honor of this special day, I am announcing my latest creative pursuit intended to help people harness the power of project management.

Ok, I know that the events of this week make it less than the ideal week to launch something new, but life goes on, right?

Welcome to PM Believer

This is the inaugural edition of my new weekly blog/article series called PM Believer. The goal of this series is to help you achieve your biggest personal, professional, fitness and life goals through project management.

I am a believer in the power of project management.

I have been a professional project manager for nearly twenty years. Throughout this time I have witnessed project success drive phenomenal business results. But this is just scratching the surface of what project management can accomplish.

I have also proven that project management can be used to accomplish personal transformation. Through the power of project management I was able to transform myself from forty years of obesity into an amateur athlete in under a year. This transformation story was the basis of my book: Operation Melt: How I Used Life-Changing Project Management to Lose Over 100 Pounds In Under a Year.

Project management can literally change lives!

Now I am sharing some practical tips and techniques that you can use to help achieve your own personal goals, live your best life and become a PM Believer.

Each week I will share a project management technique that I have personally applied or have seen applied to personal goals. These techniques may make the difference between having a “someday, maybe” wish and accomplishing your biggest goals.

My goal is for these weekly posts to be quick, valuable reads for you. So each post (after this one) will be more brief than most of my posts, more bite sized. But I plan to pack a ton of value into a three hundred word post. So buckle up!

Are you ready to crush your biggest goals? Are you ready to be a PM Believer too?

For my first edition of PM Believer I am going to address one of the biggest questions I often get about project management. What the heck is it?!

What is project management?

Let’s start by making sure we are speaking the same language.

Have you ever read the textbook definition of a “project” as published by the Project Management Institute? Well here it is… please don’t stop reading here:

“A project is a temporary endevour undertaken to create a unique product, service or result.”

Just rolls right off the tongue, doesn’t it? Ok, not really. Maybe it doesn’t sound exciting, but there is a lot of power contained in those few words and projects are something that can definitely change your life.

For the sake of these PM Believer articles let’s simplify this definition:

A project is a goal that you want to achieve.

Now that we have a definition of a “project” let’s agree on a definition of “project management” so we are all talking about the same thing. Here is my definition of project management:

Project management is a structured approach for defining and achieving goals.

Pretty simple, right? Why make things more complicated than they need to be?

Truth be told, we all work on projects every day at work and in our personal lives. We are all project managers. And, with a few practical tips and techniques, we can all use project management to change our lives and to make our dreams come true.
